Archiving

SMS, Notes and Call History constitute the Classic categories.

These items can be optionally archived in the ‘MobileSyncBrowser.Data’ file in your Documents folder. If MSB is not registered, this file is not created and the data is not archived.

Select the Archive command in your device's pop-up menu to add to the archive file and to view the contents.

Text Messages

Important: SMS, MMS (Multimedia Messages) and iMessages are not handled the same way. See below for specifics.

MSB uses a small web browser to display SMS conversations on the screen. This browser is created by the default browser on your system and the appearance may vary.

SMS (and all Classic features) allow you to export individual conversations as Text or HTML.

export dialog

If you are in the main Messages list, you may export all conversations at once, but only in Text format.

Text Export

Message 'conversations' are exported as Text documents with Timestamp, Number, Name, Message and Device ID fields. As these are easy to recognize, no column headers (titles) are output. These text documents can be viewed in a text editor, spreadsheet or database application that accepts tab-delimited files.

HTML Export

Select the HTML option to send the conversation to your default web browser. From there you may print the conversation or save it as an HTML file or Print to PDF if your system has this feature.

Split Conversation

If a single contact has more than 1,000 messages, MSB displays a blue arrow. Clicking on the blue allows you to 'split' the conversation into smaller sections for viewing and exporting. The menu has an option to display ‘All’ messages, but this may take more time than viewing/exporting in smaller sections.
Split Conversation Example

NOTE:  MSB for Windows displays boxes, not 'bubbles' if you do not have Internet Explorer 8 or greater installed.

MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)

Picture attachments are not displayed in the Messages category, but the full-resolution media file can be accessed by navigating to /Library/SMS/Parts in the Photos & Other Files category (Plus license required). Supported formats can then be previewed by using the blue chevron.

Important MMS attachments are not saved in the SMS archives. If a media file is no longer in the current iTunes backup, it cannot be retrieved. You must use the Photos & Other Files option to export any media file(s) you wish to keep.

NOTE:  MSB for Windows cannot preview attachments if you do not have Internet Explorer 8 or greater installed.

iMessages (iOS5)

iMessages are sent over the internet are are managed and displayed much like SMS messages. However, a contact may use different identifiers for SMS and iMessage and may appear as two distinct 'conversations' in MSB.

Picture attachments are not displayed in the Messages category, but the full-resolution media file can be accessed by navigating to /Library/SMS/Attachments in the Photos & Other Files category (Plus license required). Supported formats can then be previewed by using the blue chevron.

Notes

MSB may list notes more than once if MSB encounters different versions of the same note.

Notes can be exported individually as Text or sent as HTML to your default web browser.

export dialog

Text Export

Note text is stripped of formatting and saved as a text file.

HTML Export

Select the HTML option to send the note to your default web browser. From there you may print the note or save it as an HTML file or Print to PDF if your system has this feature.

Call History

Apple's iPhone keeps track of 100 recent calls, whether inbound, outbound or missed. MSB attempts to archive and aggregate this information, but if you place or receive more than 100 calls in between syncs, there may be gaps in MSB's call archive.

Call Logs can be exported individually as Text or sent as HTML to your default web browser.

export dialog

Text Export

Call logs are exported as text documents with Timestamp, Number, Name and Duration fields. As these are easy to recognize, no column headers (titles) are output.

HTML Export

Select the HTML option to send the Call History to your default web browser. From there you may print the log or save it as an HTML file or Print to PDF if your system has this feature.
